Now more than ever you see the letters C B D everywhere these days. From teas and coffees all the way to skin care. What is it and why is it in almost everything?
What is C B D?
CBD is short for Cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid found in hemp and marijuana plants. The CBD you see in stores and sold online is derived from the hemp plant. So you needn’t worry about the high effects that Marijuana is known for. You should know, hemp does contain small or trace amounts of THC. If you’re trying to avoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for any reason you will want to look for a CBD that is labeled “Isolate” or “Broad Spectrum THC Free”.
Why is CBD so popular?
Did you know that the human body has a system known as the endocannabinoid? The endocannabinoid system regulates the immune system, mood, and pain response. CBD has been found to be beneficial in balancing our endocannabinoid system creating overall homeostasis. (SOURCE)
Our endocannabinoid systems create our own cannabinoids! How cool? They bind to receptors in the brain, nervous system, and immune system. (9) And cannabinoids have even been found in human breastmilk. Possibly helping regulate infants feeding and general homeostasis.
Knowing that, you can kind of piece together what has made it so popular.
What can CBD be used for?
Though many studies need to be preformed yet, here is a list of what people use CBD for and claim it has helped or benefited them in such ways:
• Ease anxiety and depression (3, 8, 12, 25)
• Help ease nausea (30)
• Help get better sleep (3)
• Help control seizure disorders (9, 27)
• Help ease pain (9)
• Aid in opioid addiction recovery (16, 22, 23)
• Regulate hormones (15)
Does it have any side effects?
CBD has been shown to have some side effects like diarrhea, changes in appetite, tiredness. (6, 26) If you experience any side effects, assess the situation amd always speak with your Healthcare professional for guidance.
Does CBD sound right for you?
Now to learn how to find the right stuff! Hint: it’s not from your local movie store.
With hemp farming being newer in the US there aren’t many restrictions and guidelines on pesticide or herbicide use on crops. So it’s best to search for organic or a farm working on their organic certification. The last thing our bodies need are more toxins while we are trying to fix it!
There are two popular ways to extract CBD from hemp. Ethanol extraction which is using alcohol (typically a 200 proof food grade ethanol) to dissolve the oil and plant extracts without the use of heat. The other process is CO2 extraction. Using CO2 at very low temperatures and then put under pressure to extract the plant compounds. (SOURCE)
You want to avoid companies that use cheap extraction methods like hexane or that use a lot of heat. This is why its important to know and understand the extraction process so when you look to find that company’s methods you can decifer whether they are truly what they claim to be. If the brand you’re looking at either doesn’t provide their extraction method or 3rd party testing results then avoid them at all costs. Your CBD brand should be proud of the work they put into providing an exceptional product. Not just claiming that they do with no proof.
This company sources their CBD from an organically grown hemp farm that is very proud to provide 3rd party testing and they also encourage customers to email them with any questions to help you better understand their methods. (They also use the ethanol extraction method so no heat!)
Earthley’s Anxiety Calm Oil (CBD Oil) <— Clickable link!
In an attempt to avoid recent social media censorship Earthley named their CBD oil Anxiety Calm. They have 3 formulas.
Formula A is made with adaptogenic herbs (more on adaptogens soon!) And it does NOT contain CBD
Formula C is made with the same adaptogens in Formula A but has CBD in it as well
Formula P is pure CBD in a carrier oil (hemp seed oil)
For topical pain relief use this rub!

Earthley uses CBD sourced from Flora Sophia Botanicals. An amazing company who are open about their CBD tests and extraction processes. They grow all their crops without the use of pesticides and chemicals.
