Okay so I honest to God had no huge expectations for going Paleo. Usually when I get super excited about a new lifestyle something doesn’t go how I wanted and I quit. So I just decided I need to jump into this head first, no reading reviews, no reading tips from the internet, etc. I did get a Clean Paleo cookbook (my mom ordered it for me as I had it sitting in the Amazon cart and forgot about it!) So I started there. She had a wonderful straight to the point list of absolute must haves before starting paleo. I’m not even going to sugar coat it, all of the first time essentials came out to a hefty grocery bill. As I expected though but it was 100% worth it too. So now the rest of our trips won’t be too much more than usual, only healthier!
The day before we started, we cleared the house of the rest of our non-paleo foods. If it wasn’t used or opened we put it away for emergency prep foods. As long as it had a longer shelf life of course. We were nearing our grocery day anyway so we didn’t have much to get rid of. But if you do have a lot to get rid of you could get a tote bin and toss unopened longer shelf life foods in there for emergencies or you could donate to a food bank or shelter near you!
So the next morning (Day 1) I took my essentials grocery list which also included meal ingredients that I didn’t already have as well, and off I went to the store. Over $400 later I came home with all of our basic essentials (minus a couple things I just could not find, I’ll probably have to order online if a recipe I want calls for it). Day 1 was nothing but hunger and excitement haha! We cooked and baked our first meals and desert snacks after snacking on paleo friendly foods I grabbed because I knew when I got home everyone would be hounding me for food. We started our journey with paleo muffins and our own mini fritatas! Kevin also made some homemade chocolate, which is delicious! I’ll have to get him to share the recipe with me so I can share with you all.
Day 2 I started my day with a mini fritata and a banana. I was running late for work and had to haul 3 kids to the sitter so the mini fritata almost quite literally saved my life from dying hunger. So a huge tip I have is always have to-go foods cooked/prepped ready to go for yourself! And have fruits and veggies readily available too.
The day went smoothly. I didn’t have any sugar crashes that required me to sit and eat asap or feel like I’d die. I usually get that after 4 hours of work and not eating. After doing Weight Watchers (lost 20lbs!) I was able to go longer periods of time without needing to eat. After falling off my WW wagon I started eating not so awesome again. Causing myself some sugar crashes after certain amount if time after eating. Not so fun. It wasn’t terrible but of course not enjoyable. Once I’d get my hands on some food I’d inhale it like a vacuum! Yeah I completely lost self control.
Day 3 I noticed my “chicken skin” rask on the back of my arms was literally almost gone! I’ve had this ugly purple dotty rash on my arms for maybe 4 or more years now. I’ve always suspected it was a gluten intolerance, and I have to say I’m extremely impressed that after 3 days of 100% gluten free that it is already disappearing! And I’m talking this rash COVERED the backs of my arms. It was ugly, purple and pink and red. Now I’m almost back to normal skin tones! Yay! After seeing that I decided to hop on the scale, if my body can recover that quickly from gluten I wonder how quickly it can recover from sugar and dairy. Now I didn’t weigh myself the day before day 1 but I did weigh myself within the week prior and I was 160-162lbs. Day 3 I weighed in at 156.6! Which means I’m one pound away from getting back to my 20lb weight loss achievement!
Day 4-7 nothing majorly significant happened! I haven’t had any detox symptoms thank goodness. That might be because we didn’t completely cut out sugars, we still eat honey and maple syrup. We keep it to a minimum of course! The kids are loving all the food we are making. I was worried this would be a bigger fight to get them to eat.
Overall I rate Paleo 5 out of 5 definitely recommend! More on paleo to come!
