I love myself a DIY day to one, save money, and two, do something other than my day-to-day activities. Though, now that I have four kids and a full-time job, it’s hard to have a solo DIY day where I can focus on self-care and watch any TV I want. Color me basic, but these days, I’m into murder documentaries which are a little too much for the kids, so I don’t get to watch them much at all. But DIY recipes are so much fun and cost-effective! With inflation these days, I swear some of these companies went balls to the wall with price gauging in the name of inflation. So to save you a few bucks, you could try out some DIY skincare recipes to help you swap out those toxic products sooner!
DIY Your Skincare
- Honey and Cinnamon Face: Mask This mask is great for acne-prone skin, as honey has antibacterial properties and cinnamon can help to reduce inflammation. Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and apply to your face. Leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.
- Cucumber and Aloe Vera Eye Gel: Cucumber has a cooling effect and can help to reduce puffiness, while aloe vera can soothe and hydrate the delicate skin around the eyes. Blend 1/2 a cucumber and 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel in a blender until smooth. Apply the mixture around your eyes, and leave on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off with cool water.
- Coffee and Coconut Oil Body Scrub: Coffee grounds are a great exfoliant, and can help to improve circulation and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Coconut oil is a great moisturizer, and will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. Mix 1/2 cup of coffee grounds with 1/4 cup of melted coconut oil, and apply to your body in circular motions. Rinse off with warm water.
- Face Serum: Oils, such as rosehip, jojoba, and argan oil, are rich in antioxidants and can help to nourish and protect the skin. Mix 1/2 ounce of your favorite seed oil with 3 drops of lavender essential oil, and apply to your face before bed. This serum will help to hydrate and brighten your skin, while also promoting relaxation and reducing stress.
- Honey and Oatmeal Face Scrub: Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it helps to draw moisture into the skin. Oatmeal is also great for the skin as it soothes and gently exfoliates. To make this scrub, mix together 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of ground oatmeal. Massage onto your face in circular motions, then rinse with warm water.
- Avocado and Yogurt Face Mask: Avocado is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as antioxidants, making it a great ingredient for nourishing the skin. Yogurt contains lactic acid, which gently exfoliates and brightens the skin. Mash ½ an avocado and mix in 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt. Apply to your face and leave on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
- Green Tea Toner: Green tea is packed with antioxidants, making it a great ingredient for a toner that can help to reduce inflammation and redness. Brew a cup of green tea and let it cool down. Use a cotton ball to apply the tea to your face after cleansing.
